Environmental hazards are the primary source of danger and puzzle-solving pressure in INSIDE, the 2016 2D side-scrolling puzzle-platformer by Playdead. Rather than relying on combat, the game places the unnamed boy protagonist in a world where the environment itself is lethal: rising water, exposed spikes, live electrical wiring, industrial machinery, collapsing structures, and steam vents all demand precise timing, spatial reasoning, and route selection to survive.
These hazards are not merely obstacles to jump over. They are woven into the level architecture so that solving a puzzle often means navigating a corridor where a single misstep triggers a cascade of danger. The hazards also serve a narrative function, reflecting the oppressive, decaying authoritarian world the boy traverses, where infrastructure is both a tool of control and a source of indiscriminate death.

Lore & Background
INSIDE presents a grey, rain-soaked world under the grip of a faceless authoritarian regime. The boy who serves as the player's avatar moves through residential streets, industrial complexes, coastal cliffs, and vast institutional interiors, and in every setting the environment has been shaped by that regime's machinery. Electrical fences that once kept populations in line now electrocute anyone who brushes them. Steam vents from abandoned processing plants fill corridors with scalding fog. The sea, relentless and indifferent, floods low-lying passages with each passing wave.
What makes the environmental hazards feel narratively loaded is that they are not random. A field of spikes guards a door that was meant to stay shut. A crumbling floor in a government building suggests neglect, or deliberate sabotage. The hazards tell a story of a society that built infrastructure for control and then abandoned it, leaving the boy to navigate the wreckage of systems designed to keep people in place.
Playdead's design philosophy, carried over from Limbo, treats the environment as the antagonist. There is no health bar to manage, no inventory to consult, and no dialogue to explain what is happening. The boy simply falls, is crushed, is electrocuted, or drowns, and the player restarts. The tension comes from reading the space: noticing the wire that will snap when a panel is pulled, the floor that will give way after three seconds, the tide that will rise while the player is still climbing.
In Their Own Story
The corridor is dark except for a single overhead light that flickers with each step. The boy crouches, pressing his back against the concrete wall, and watches the steam vent cycle: hiss, pause, hiss. Two seconds of silence. He moves. The next vent is closer. He counts the tiles under his bare feet—three, four, five—when the floor groans and a slab of rusted metal tilts, revealing a shaft of black water far below. He stops. The water is rising. He can hear it lapping against the lower edge of the shaft, patient and inevitable. Somewhere ahead, a dog barks once and falls silent. The boy does not turn around. He runs.
Reader's Guide
Water and drowning is the most persistent hazard in INSIDE. In coastal and submerged sections, the tide rises in real time, giving the player a shrinking window to cross. In enclosed areas, water pools in low ground and the boy drowns if he lingers. The key skill is reading the water level relative to the path and committing to a route before the margin disappears.
Spikes and static hazards appear as fixed obstacles—rows of metal points, open pits, or exposed rebar. They are usually placed to force a specific path or to punish a greedy shortcut. Timing is rarely the issue; spatial awareness is. You must see the safe line before you commit.
Electricity introduces a timing layer. Wires, fences, and exposed conduits cycle between live and dead. The player must observe the cycle, time a dash through the gap, or find a way to cut power at a source. Later sections combine multiple electrical elements, requiring the player to trigger one mechanism to disable another before crossing.
Fire, steam, and industrial machinery create area-denial zones. A steam vent fills a corridor on a timer; a conveyor or crusher demands that the player time their passage between cycles. The escalation in the later game stacks these hazards: a collapsing floor over a pit of spikes, with a rising tide below and a live wire overhead. The puzzle is no longer 'avoid one thing' but 'sequence four things in the correct order within a shrinking time window.'
Collapsing structures are the most dynamic hazard. Floors give way, walls crumble, and entire sections of a building shift. The player must move through a space that is actively disintegrating, often while another hazard (water, fire) is simultaneously closing in. These sequences are where INSIDE's tension peaks, because the environment is not waiting for the player to be ready.
